Surya Dinapatrika Sahitya Seva: Samakalina Drkpatham
(Surya Daily Newspaper’s Contribution to Telugu Literature Research,
Analysis and Literary Criticism) – M.Phil. Dissertation

Botlaguduru Venkata Sai Gowtama

Uncovering contemporary social life in all aspects is the main objective of every mass medium. The basic idea behind any mass medium is giving facts, especially by the Newspapers. Literature with its cornerstone as fiction, when integrated into a newspaper it gives a perfect apparatus in shaping a better society. In this fashion newspapers like Surya daily are unveiling the world literature to Telugu readers. Hence, I want to analyze this cocktail of facts and fiction by observing Surya daily as a case study.

First chapter covers the history of Surya Daily. Besides this I have also explained its objectives and stance.

In the second chapter I tried to throw some light on the poetry published in Surya daily. It covered every trend and moment in modern Telugu poetry. Based on my study, most of the poetry published fit into the literary trend called Empiricism. Poetry from other literary trends like Romantic poetry, Progressive poetry, Revolutionary poetry, Feministic poetry, Dalit Poetry and Globalization poetry were also published in Surya daily.

Third chapter deals with the literary essays published in Surya daily. In this chapter I have analyzed various writers in view of their writing style and perspective. Essays on literature in other languages and translated works in Telugu published by Surya daily were also studied.

During the process of my study I have realized how greatly a newspaper can benefit literature. Examining the critical reviews of numerous writers in a chronological order will give us the exact path with respect to the evolution of Telugu literary criticism.

Fourth chapter includes the review of literary essays published in the literary page of Surya daily entitled Aksharam. These essays not only provide information on literary issues but on social issues as well. The two main driving points of Classical Telugu literature were Rejoice and Preach. The modern literature has an addition to the earlier two and that is social benefit. As the watchdog of society, it is the newspaper's prime concern to look into social problems and make people aware of these problems which, in turn, encourages the mass to find possible solutions. Surya daily is also making its way to reach the mass through its Aksharam page. On top of this, Surya daily is boosting the fascination on literature among its readers. Also it endorses the idea of “Newspaper Literature” for contemporary writers and researches.
