Loan Verbal Bases in Old Tamil (Article in Tamil)

Prof. S. Rajendran

Abstract

This article in Tamil discusses the various aspects of loan words identified in Old Tamil, including Sangam Literature. Analysis of loan words enables us to identify various linguistic processes adopted and adapted by the language in that particular period. These trends and aspects may also continue all through the later periods of the particular language. In addition, identification of the aspects and processes of such loans reveals also the social and political life of the period.

This article discusses how Old Tamil has borrowed more words from the Sanskrit language than from other languages. Many reasons for this overdependence on the Sanskrit language may be offered. But at the same time resistance to borrow also can be identified. Earliest Tamil grammar Tolkappiam offers several rules as to how loan words must be treated.

This article takes up a number of loan words and discusses the structural variations, etc. brought in by such loans, especially in using the load words.

Keywords: Old Tamil, loan words, loan verbal bases
