Motivation of Bangladeshi Higher Secondary Students of Bangladesh
in Learning English Language

Zahid Hussain Md. Jakir Masum

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to find out the nature of motivation among the students of class XI-XII. The researcher conducted the research in twenty colleges—ten from the city, and the other ten are from rural area of Bangladesh. The data was collected by using a questionnaire from a total of 402 students from the colleges under the study. The students were of similar age, and they were studying the same syllabus under Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board of Dhaka. This study found that the students are more conscious about the instrumental factors of motivation in language learning. It reveals that the lack of integrative motivation among the students is a prime reason of students’ inability of being an efficient communicator in English despite studying English in 12 years education before starting tertiary education.

Keywords: Motivation, Higher secondary level students, English language learning, English as a foreign language

Background of the Research

There are mainly two types of education system in Bangladesh: (a) Bengali Medium, and (b) English Medium; with four leveled education system: (a) Primary, (b) Secondary, (c) Higher Secondary (Intermediate), and (d) Tertiary. The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) is responsible for preparing curriculum, designing syllabus and publishing books for Bengali medium school and colleges up to higher secondary level. In Bangladesh, many foreign languages are taught e.g. English, Arabic, French, German, Urdu, Farsi etc. while only English is compulsory subject across primary, secondary, higher secondary and tertiary levels. Earlier, Grammar-translation method was used to teach English while recently, Communicative Approach has been introduced with aim the give students’ ample opportunities of practicing English to build students’ communicative ability. Despite that students are not capable of communicating in English after studying it in their 12 years’ education before starting tertiary education. This situation gives the researcher an instinct to work on this area.
